Summer- if you can call the funereal seventeen-degree drizzle that was July and August this year summer, that is- is well and truly over. But if you’re a recent university graduate wondering what to do now that festivals, holidays and barbecues have trickled to a stop, don’t despair- as the famous Keats poem says, autumn is the best season for graduates to get their first job! Here are five reasons why:
1. Companies are hiring now- but they won’t be for ever
Most companies go on two big annual recruitment drives: at the start of the year, and in the autumn. Summer tends to be quiet, as it’s difficult to get things moving with everyone on holiday, and hiring managers, just like everyone else, tend to switch into prosecco-and-presents mode around Black Friday. Now, with everyone ‘back to school’, is a great time to get job hunting- but with each week we move closer to Christmas, there will be fewer jobs advertised. If you want to get yourself sorted soonish, now’s the time to do it.
2. Avoid the crowds
May, June and July are known in the recruitment industry as ‘graduate season’- the time when thousands of finalists dot the last ‘i’ on their exam papers and pour out of the universities in droves, looking for jobs. In late spring and summer, you might be competing for the best opportunities with thousands of people with your exact profile- but by autumn, a large proportion of grads are either already sorted or off on gap years. Snap up your dream job while competition’s thin on the ground!
3. Don’t leave it too long…
At what point do you stop being a fresh graduate, and start being unemployed? These days it’s quite normal to spend a few months off on an adventure, working on your own projects, or just thinking about what you really want to do- but let’s be realistic. Employees looking through hundreds of CVs for self-starters with ambition, determination and drive will be likely be more impressed with candidates who don’t have long gaps in their CVs.
4. Winter socials
Is there any better way to make a good impression on your new team than doing your best Bridget Jones impression at the office Christmas karaoke?
5. Christmas is coming
… and there’s no better time to feel rich than when you’re buying presents, going out loads and buying lots of party clothes!
