3 ways to stand out this Summer as a graduate looking for a job in a fast growing technology company

The Summer is the busiest time of year for graduates looking to enter the job market. To achieve your goals, you need to stand out from the crowd.

Around 400,000 people graduate from UK universities every year. Most will take a well earned summer off to hit the beach and the festival. Then, in September, it’s time to start looking for a job. Actually, more than that. It’s time to start looking for a career.

That’s a lot of people. If you’re a graduate looking for a job in September or right now, you need to make an impact. You need to position yourself as someone companies should be falling over themselves to hire. Here are 3 tips for doing just that.

1 – Do your research

Spending time before your interview researching is essential. Not only does it show your prospective employers that you are interested in them, you may also find some clues on what they’re looking for in a potential hire. You’ll find that you are better prepared to answer their questions and stand out from the crowd. Here are some things you must research:

The mission statement and company values – find out what attributes will make you a success.
The key individuals in the organisation (e.g. CEO, CRO) – you might not meet them, but it shows interest to know who they are.
News about the company – have they just launched a new product? Raised funding?
You need to know this.

If you know who will be interviewing you, make sure you look them up on LinkedIn. You may be able to find a connection you can build on during the interview. It’s not stalking. It’s research!

2 – Don’t leave anything on the table

Your interview is your one chance to shine. It’s your one opportunity to show a potential employer that you are the person they need. So, take that chance. Don’t leave that room with any regrets. Don’t leave anything on the table.

I always say that with our assessment days, the people who don’t go through to the next stage are the people that don’t contribute. If you don’t say anything, what am I supposed to assess? The same is true with interviews. Even saying the wrong thing is better than nothing.

Think about what you can say that will demonstrate that you have the skills they are looking for. If you have any stories, that is a great way to bring it to life. Remember that companies know that you’re a grad. They are not looking for someone who knows everything about sales. They want someone with energy and enthusiasm with a willingness to learn and be coached.

Finally, don’t forget to ask questions. Show that you are thoughtful about the company and the process.

3 – Follow up

Just like in sales, the money is in the follow-up. Make sure that you follow up with your company or recruiter about how your interview went. It demonstrates that you are interested in the job. Even if you don’t get hired, you will still receive valuable feedback.

Companies need to stand out too. It’s not just candidates that need to stand out in September. Companies need to position themselves as a place where the best candidates want to work. If you run a company, you want the cream of the crop applying to work with you.
